I don't have very many gigs right now. recently quit a cover band to play Originals with another band. It allows me to spend more time with my family.

The way money is on the cover circuit, id rather play great originals. Not much money to be had in the clubs these days.

Crap, These days it's the same for covers, WE still get gigs through word of mouth, and our reputation. I truly feel sorry for the younguns and start up bands.

Most places want you to play for free or tips (same thing as free in my book) and they're not even decent enough to offer a couple drinks on the house. I do way better as a DJ and all they want a DJ to play is what everybody can hear on the radio. What's the Point when they can listen to the radio when they leave?

They can drink in a booth while watching real booty shake on the dance floor.

I thought you didn't have radio stations up there. Based upon that,I guess y'all need D.J's,(Flashback, they used to have REAL live D.J.'s on radio stations TOO).

We have top 40, classic rock, and pop/country. I don't listen to much of those genres. When I do listen to the radio, it's usually talk or occasionally classic rock.

I would sure like to meet the individual responsible for coming up with that scam, I would clearly invite that dude to go for an Airboat ride.

The only reason I can come up with for pay to play being a good idea is if you pay rent for a venue and sell tickets and charge vendors to sell there goods at the show. That's called spending money to make money. It's a lot better than spending money to lose money.

Boston is a Pay To Play town. Clubs which book original acts demand a minimum booking. How it worked back in the day was the Channel Club would sell you 200 tickets for $200.00 "Boys, this is your business. Smoke em, sell em, charge $50 per ticket i dont care- just hand me two Benjamins right now and you have an opening slot on Friday night". Boston has over 50 colleges, with 5 or so actual conservatorys. My old catchphrase for Boston? "100 clubs, 5000 bands".
