Boston is a Pay To Play town. Clubs which book original acts demand a minimum booking. How it worked back in the day was the Channel Club would sell you 200 tickets for $200.00 "Boys, this is your business. Smoke em, sell em, charge $50 per ticket i dont care- just hand me two Benjamins right now and you have an opening slot on Friday night". Boston has over 50 colleges, with 5 or so actual conservatorys. My old catchphrase for Boston? "100 clubs, 5000 bands". How likely is it for bands to make that money back?

A buck a ticket COULD be profitable, depending on the venue, however,IF the venue is pulling that shit,it's a fair BET that you ain't gonna break even,or else THEY would assume that risk,as well as the profits. Believe, They ain't likely to leave a dollar on the table.

You need a follwing. $200 for $200 tickets. Sell aeach one for $3, you had a $400 night. How hard would it be to get 100 people to committ to $6 each?

Yeah. I was in a Classic Rock/Grunge cover band 6 years ago. Could barely GET 20 people to show up to a no cover situation. Blame the strict drunk driving laws, no one wants to be out driving at checkpoint time.

I don't have 200 friends. You gonna sell them on the street, like a scalper? Oh yeah you say,but it's only 50 per band member. Bullshit is what I say to that. Your bandmates are a LOT different than mine IF you can count on THEM,and that's ALL of them to sell 50 tickets each. One dude drops the ball, and y'all are screwed.

I'm telling you, unless it's a sho nuff charity event, I'M not even gonna load up MY stuff, for less than $100.00. It just ain't worth it to me.

That reminds me, Can I write charity events off on my taxes? Only if you got a "donation" Receipt. Expenses actually incurred,YES,but for your donated services,ONLY with a receipt. Playing at YOUR church doesn't count. Besides, unless you have at least 5 grand worth,it really won't make any difference.
