Warning: Troll Thread.
So the only working amp i have at home is an Eden WTX264 into my trusty Schroeder 212. Watts are not equal to DB! My Mesa 400+ is roughly the same 264 watts into 4 ohms. What do YOU think? Lol. The Eden is a fine amp, fits in a gigbag, etc etc. Tone for days! But i dont need a DB meter to know its less than half the DB output through the same cab.
Consider this: the Watt was "discovered" before AC amplification was invented. At its root, a watt is a HEAT measurement of power. Amp engineers HATE the watt as a unit of measurement- amp companies love it. Why? Just because something pumps out 500 watts doesnt mean it does so with any efficiency. Peavey is famous for this. All through the 90s, they put out amps which went down to 2 ohms then they would ADVERTISE this amp at its greatest efficiency, namely a 2 ohm load. Christ, my Mesa goes down to 2 ohms, id be afraid to crank it in a building i liked.
Then theres the Hartke 7000 in our practice space. Two 350 watt amps with a biamp and crossover. Duuuuude this thing can kill elephants. All 300 watt amps are not equal.

That's a fact, while the wattage IS important as far as headroom goes, what good is 500 watts, that sounds like shit?

Headroom is a perfect issue. Is headroom definable? We all know what it is. If you have to max out volume and gain to be heard, you lack headroom. But it takes 10 to 20 years objective experience to be in the know. I feel bad for noobs who buy the hype and spend $1200 on a stack that sounds like shit and doesnt cut through a pounding drummer and two butthead guitarists. Or, the amp is inappropriate for whatever genre of music they play, cause the salesman in Sam Ash wanted the big commission.

I've been trying to explain this to people for years. It's not just beginners who don't know, People who have been playing for 10+ years are victim to this "common knowledge" also.

LMFAO Common knowledge Indeed. Makes you wonder how much common knowledge is actually a bunch of bologna. A LOT. Kinda like wives tales. Just have a GO at some of the horse shit posted on T.B., stated as gospel truth, and sadly, believed and shared. Or go to guitar center and listen to the "expert" advice given by sales people.

Truth. Id swear my 500 watt 2x10 Avatar Neo blows away my 212 700 watt Schroeder. Both are 4 ohm impedance.
And i pretty much know why. The Avatar is a real cab, made from birch plywood. The Schroeder is some synthetic spaceage junk. I sacrifice a ton of punch and volume for a 39 lb load in.

The cab itself is over 50% of punch. Anyone doubting that, plug into a 1970s reflex cab with folded horns. No one lugs those suckers around anymore cause they weigh a ton. But truth of the matter is the more resonant material surrounding the voice coil and cone, the more bottom end is heading out to THE FOH.

I have an Ashdown folded horn cab,an old one, circa mid 80's, I plug it into MY GK 1001rb and it will knock you on your ass at about 40 feet. Admittedly,I only bother hauling it for outdoor, and larger venue gigs, The fucking thing weighs about a metric ton (OK,slightly exaggerated, but you get the point) Otherwise I use a GK 15,rear ported,OR a 4x10 front ported,OR both, depending on the venue.

If i were going out on tour next month with a robust budget id have a couple 18s in reflex cabs with folded horns and two 2×10 with folded horns and two Mesa Boogie Strategy 465 watt tube heads. And a few crossovers. $10,000 in backline goodness.

This is true. The cab's efficiency really is what's important. Much more than the power of the amp.
One of those old folded horns you mention are usually capable of playing something like 110db @1meter, with one single watt of power. Seriously.
Modern cabs? Not so much.
