So our leader brought in a guitarist about 2 months ago.
SPED.
I really like the guy, but i spent an hour alongside the keyboardist teaching him several solos. Singing, shouting out tab and Nashville numbers.
My instinct is this. Keep him til we can replace him. We have 60 tunes and it took us 90 minutes to get him up to speed on 3 of them.
Hell of a nice guy, but no feel for classic R&B.

Update:
About a week ago I called the band leader;
"Guitar dude makes me nervous".
"Oh yeah? Makes me nervous too!".
We took a band vote and he was unanimously let go.
See, we had a gig lined up on 3/30 and after the last practice he attended, i couldnt concieve of the absolute collapse a 3 hour gig would be with this guy.
We asked to reschedule at a later date.

We auditioned a real pro. Knew most of the studio chops to most of the tunes. Those he didnt know he made up tastefully in the box.
We asked him to join the band, he politely declined.
Back to square 1.

Yup.
Guy was a total pro. He did the 100% class thing, declined cause hes looking for.something bluesyer.
Didnt waste our time.

Now the singer is falling apart.
He's a young dude and thinks his original project is going to get him rich.
Oh yeah, the horn players quit.
So we found a great guitarist who can play anything.
Currently the lineup is down to core level.
Bass, drums, guitar, keys.
We all sing backing harmony except for the guitarist.
The old me would have bailed by now.
But here im thinking;
DC, the leader/keyboardist, is going through pancreatic cancer treatment.
I'm turning 50. Rockstar dreams are behind me, I look at ads for busy gigging bands and wince.
It won't kill me to stand next to a dying man for a year or two whos trying to build his Memphis Soul dream band.
Maturity. Go figure.

Practice was again cancelled.
I sent this long whining text to my wife but forgot to look at the recipient, band leader got it instead.
Was complaining about my $63 gross revenue for over 8 hours attempted work.
I think he felt so bad for my loser ass he cancelled practice.
