This is a frustrating subject for me. I love Gospel! Its the original Soul music.
Back around 1996, i was invited into an AME Zion Pentecostal Church to play bass. Monster musicians! Those deep Baptists wouldnt leave me alone tho, always trying to sprinkle water on Brotha Dave. Don't get me wrong, I'm a believer. I just dont subscribe to Nicean Christianity per se. Was really frustrating to have to leave that church, they satisfied my musical soul with the tunes and the Hammond B3. I just dont have any interest in becoming one of the 144,000. Read your Revelations.

Read your Revelations. I have played in several "worship teams ",some were paid gigs TOO. Yeah that whole 144K thing bothers me. Like what, over the last 2,000 years THOSE slots haven't already been filled? What then, heaven is full? And when you get there you find a NO VACANCY sign??? Bullshit

Christ has never been my problem. Its the several hundred cardinals whom gathered in Nicea in 322 who for no reason decided to throw out half the bible. Who were they to decide whats the word of God and whats not?

Yeah,I had fun playing in those worship teams, most of the time. Generally speaking, the teams,OR bands in the secular realm were chock full of monster musicians, especially the paid gigs. The problem I had was with the hypocrisy and holier than thou attitudes.

As a Christian I can tell you there is a huge difference between a religious christian and a person who follows Christ. There is no such thing as a good Christian either. We are all just as screwed up as everybody else. It should be the goal of all Christians to avoid holier than thou attitudes. You'll never hear me say I'm perfect or better in any way because of who I know (hopefully I wouldn't say that). That's something I might have said in the past when I didn't understand what I was being "taught". That's just how I believe things; everyone is free to have a different view.
Back to music: I really enjoy playing contemporary church music and I had a very cool gig every Sunday for about 2 years that I gave up because of religious drama. It really sucked to lose that opportunity, but all the stress is not worth it. I have experienced way less drama in secular bands than church bands.

Answer Because WE don't think that we are better than others, just because we are a pastor,or deacon,OR the highly exalted worship leader. Suck this.worship Dees.

It's not like that for all churches, but I think it probably is for more than half. I'm just judging by my past experiences. The bad thing is, it might just be one bad egg that causes drama. That holds true for most things in life though.

IN my personal experience,it's usually the worship leader,of course they like to point fingers and claim that the ridiculous Crap that they come up with is just being passed down from the pastor. I'm the asshole when I have the audacity to call bullshit, and ask the pastor myself.

So How do you guys deal with that foolishness? It's easy for me. I just quit when it gets too stressful or annoying. Just like with any other band, I have a stress threshold that I'm not willing to cross. Another thing I will do is avoid any decision making. Anytime somebody says, "what do you think about...." I'll act like a clueless dumb bass player. This will sometimes let the drama fly right by me.
